Flash Flood Watch issued November 14 at 3:22AM EST expiring November 15 at 10:00PM EST by NWS Newport/Morehead City NC Read More...
Description: A strengthening area of low pressure will travel inland up the east coast on Thursday, and will bring rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms to the area. Another 2 to 4 inches or rain are expected from about US 17 east, with about 1 to 2 inches expected further west. Given that most of the area has seen anywhere from 200 to 300 percent or normal rainfall over the past two weeks, flash flooding is possible, especially in flood prone locations. The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has issued a * Flash Flood Watch for a portion of eastern North Carolina, including the following areas, Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Duplin, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, Mainland Dare, Mainland Hyde, Martin, Onslow, Outer Banks Dare, Outer Banks Hyde, Pamlico, Pitt, Tyrrell, and Washington. * From Tonight through Thursday evening * Heavy rain will begin late tonight, and last through the Thursday before tapering off Thursday night. Storm total rainfall amounts will range from 1 to 2 inches over the coastal plain, with amounts 2 to 4 inches expected closer to the coast, with localized higher amounts. * This rainfall could produce flash flooding, particularly in poor drainage areas near creeks, streams and ditches. Street flooding is likely. In addition, the ground remains saturated due to heavy rainfall over the last few weeks. As a result, it will not take much rainfall to produce flooding.

Instruction: A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
