Artist Spotlight: Ian Cross

It’s been a while since our last “Artist Spotlight” so to end the year on a good note, we’ve stumbled across a new artist in the Outer Banks and couldn’t be more stoked to showcase his art. Here’s a quick bio from Ian Cross:

Booth.Ian Cross.SPC 2014I grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia just close enough to the Atlantic Ocean to discover the enchantment of riding waves at an early age. Having different generations of my family living on the Outer Banks and spending my summers here as a kid, it wasn’t long before I was paddling into beautiful, uncrowded waves, the likes of which I did not see in Virginia Beach. Taking trips down to Cape Hatteras as a teenager proved an early inspiration with me and started to mold the kind of artwork I liked to create. I pursued this further by attending art school at Virginia Commonwealth University where I received my BFA in illustration. Taking a typical art school graduates path I learned to cook and I’ve been working in kitchens ever since, selling my paintings on the side, sliding down to Carolina anytime I could. This past year I got married and decided I would pursue my dream of finally living on the Outer Banks. I wanted to be part of the good, the bad, but mostly beautiful local culture I see happening here. Mostly I just wanted a life that more closely revolved around the ocean, and regularly getting pitted, so far, so good. The mesmerizing array of light, color, patterns and sculptural qualities of breaking waves serve as the main inspiration for my work. You can see more of my paintings on Facebook at Ian Cross Art or by stopping by Cafe Lachine in Nags Head where I currently have a wall of artwork hanging.
