Remembering 2M – “Paddle Out”

On Saturday June 17, the surfing community got together to pay tribute to one of the most iconic individuals on the Outer Banks: Mickey (2M) McCarthy. Mickey passed away due to health problems in December of 2016 but has left a legacy behind that will never be forgotten. His contributions to the surfing community run about as deep as they come. Not only has he contributed, he did it with a smile, compassion, and an eagerness to help people without ever asking for anything in return. His generosity and openness to everyone that crossed his path is truly what made this event an emotional one. He will be missed but never forgotten. Thanks to everyone involved who made this a special and memorable event. It was held at the Bonnett Street Beach Access in Nags Head just north of the Nags Head Pier during the Surfrider Foundation, Outer Banks Chapter's "International Surfing Day" event. As luck may have it, we were blessed with sunny skies, warm water and a solid ENE ground swell..... IN THE MIDDLE OF JUNE! For those who couldn't attend (or could attend but couldn't paddle out), here's a video that documents the event: Video from Brad Styron:
