2M Paddle Out/International Surfing Day on June 17 at Bonnett Street
Mark your calendars for a day to celebrate the life of Mickey McCarthy (2M). Mickey has been a longtime fixture on the Outer Banks and has been loved by many. Here are a few words from the board of the Surfrider Foundation, Outer Banks Chapter:
Dear Members of the Outer Banks community — Surfers and otherwise:
On December 23, 2016, we lost one of our most beloved fixtures and friends, Mickey McCarthy. Mickey was more than just a surfer, shaper, photographer and Surfrider supporter. He was a dear friend and legendary influence who touched just about every person on this beach in one way or another. He also did more to help put our unique waveriding culture on the map than just about any other human. And we can think of no greater way to honor his legacy than by holding this year’s International Surfing Day celebration in his honor.
On June 17, 2017, please join us at the Bonnett Street beach access in Nags Head for a paddle-out ceremony and celebration of Mickey’s life. For those who aren’t familiar, the ceremony is a Hawaiian tradition where the departed’s loved ones paddle out past the breakers and join hands to form a circle. Anyone who participates is welcome to take a moment in the middle to share a memory or say some words. At the end, everyone splashes the surface to make a watery ring as a symbolic farewell to the person who’s impacted our lives. Even if you’ve never touched the ocean before, consider yourself invited. We will have extra boards, SUPs and kayaks on hand, but feel free to bring your own.
Note: We plan to start the ceremony at 6pm so please arrive early enough to be ready to paddle out promptly. Also, in the interest of space, we ask that you carpool if possible. If Bonnett Street is full, there are plenty of accesses to the north and south. We also have permission to use the Nags Head Elementary Street Parking Lot. Please do not park on any side streets. The town is being very accommodating and that was one of their few requests.
As we stated earlier, June 17 is also International Surfing Day. Surfrider will be setting up a few hours early for a beach cleanup. Enjoy some Boars Head grillables, hopefully a wave, and a beer or two. Bring what you want. But, most importantly, just show up to share memories of Mickey — a man this whole beach loved and will miss forever and will certainly never forget.
Thank you so much.
