Recreational Fishing Report (Week Ending 11/8/15)
OCEAN: The past weeks favorable weather has offered good fishing in all modes. Offshore catches from the North beach marinas have included limits of dolphin on most outings along with a few but very large wahoo specimens, moderate amounts of both blackfin & yellowfin tuna and a few billfish were also reported. Hatteras anglers did well also with plenty of citation size blackfin tuna, a noted increase in king mackerel catches offered citation size specimens as well. Large size wahoo and a few scattered dolphin and yellowfin tuna were also caught.
INLETS/SOUNDS/BAYS: Anglers fishing these water’s from Oregon Inlet northward have caught high numbers of weakfish with relative ease, unfortunately most were undersize. Striped bass catches were much improved this previous week with limits caught by almost everyone targeting them, Roanoke and Croatan Sound continue to yield the bulk of the catch but anglers report much improved keeper ratios throughout the area. Bluefish, puffer, little tunny, and black seabass were also caught in moderation. Hatteras anglers caught plenty of red drum in the 18″-27″ legal slot range along with a few very large one’s , spotted seatrout and flounder were also caught in moderate amounts offering some good dinner fare when little else was available.
PIERS/SHORE: A mixed bag of species have been caught, striped bass are now being caught off of the Northern beaches from the Virginia border southward to the Southern Shores area with some 28″ > legal ones being reported. Seemingly endless amounts of spotted seatrout have been caught everywhere but keeper ratios were less than favorable. Little tunny- (false albacore), bluefish, sea mullet, black drum, puffer, and both smooth & spiny dogfish were also caught in low-moderate amounts. Anglers fishing from Avon southward continue to catch giant over-slot red drum along with black drum, cownose rays, and plenty of both varieties of dogfish sharks.
