throw downThrow Down North of Town Surf Classic is a surf contest and raffle and is an annual event geared towards giving back to the community. The surf contest will be held at Chicahauk Beach Access in Southern Shores, NC on Saturday, September 7. Registration starts at 7 am and contest begins at 8am. There will be a surfboard giveaway and divisions for all ages! There will also be an OBX Hall of Fame Expression Session with a winner take all cash purse of $500 featuring Noah Snyder, Matt Beacham, Jessie Hines, Brett Barley, and several other local pros. This year all proceeds will benefit Keith “Scooter” Raynor, who in 2006 was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pulmonary Hypertension.

  • Pulmonary hypertension is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs and the right side of your heart. It begins when tiny arteries in your lungs become narrowed, blocked or destroyed. This makes it harder for blood to flow through your lungs, and raises pressure within your lungs’ arteries. As the pressure builds, your heart’s lower right chamber (right ventricle) must work harder to pump blood through your lungs, eventually causing your heart muscle to weaken and eventually fail.

Over the last 6 years, Scooter has lived with a Hickman catheter placed in his chest, that infuses a continuous, life sustaining drug called Flolan into his heart.
Currently, Scooter’s lung function is worsening. His doctors at Duke University University Medical Center believe new lungs will cure the PH. If the lungs work properly the heart, being a muscle, will correct and heal itself. At this time, Scooter is in the double lung transplant program at Duke awaiting activation on the transplant registry. Duke requires that each transplant patient relocate to Durham, NC for pre-transplant rehab, the surgery itself, and post transplant rehab. The entire process could take between four to six months. Scooter has a beautiful, thriving family that consists of his wife of 17 years, Melanie, and children: Jake 17, Jesse 15, Bo 13, Ella 11, and Ava 7, all avid surfers thanks to Scooter, a lifelong surfer and former pro. Scooter has maintained an incredible attitude despite his disease.
