Hurricane Sandy – Pictures and Update from Dare County Emergency Management

5pm Update from Dare County Emergency Management
Duck & Southerns Shores: no report
Kitty Hawk: The Town is trying to get things back to normal
Damage assessments have started, but not complete word on the damages
Kill Devil Hills: All secondary roads are clear
Colington, Nags Head & Roanoke Island/Manteo: no report
Manns Harbor: All Good
Stumpy Point: No report
Rodanthe: Mirlo Beach is in bad shape, damage assessment is 14 ocean front houses damaged and approx. 40 houses soundside with moderate damage. Road from Mirlo to the Temporary Bridge is still impassable, heavily damaged.
Salvo: Look good, minor water on the roadways. There is water on Hwy 12 around South Beach Subdivision because of a drain pipe clogged, NC DOT is being contacted to correct this problem
Avon: Looks good. Standing water in places approx. 3”-4”, water has been draining off well. Dune line from the Pier to the north is in good shape. All roads passable.
Buxton: Things are getting back to normal, there is water on the road at Brigands Bay in the village, another piper issue, but in good shape otherwise.
Frisco & Hatteras Village: The worst part is between Frisco & Hatteras with 6”-8” of sand on Hwy 12. NCDOT working on the road, please use caution and go slow through this area.
No significant damage reported at this time.
Road behind Burrus Red & White is passable, though water in places, recommending 4wd vehicles.
Bonner Bridge: NC DOT is still waiting for the winds to subside to be able to do the inspection. The bridge is still closed and will be until the inspection is done. Will be closed until NC DOT decides to re-open…no time frame as of yet.
Crews are working in many areas
There is a considerable amount of sand on Hwy 12 from Mirlo to the north of the Temporary Bridge. Approx amount 2’-3’ of sand. No definite time frame at this time when Hwy 12 from the Bonner Bridge to Mirlo Beach will re-open.
Dare County will be announcing regarding the Schools within the hour.
Anyone on Hatteras Island with Medical Issues, such as but regular appts for special medical issues such as but not limited to chemotherapy appts need to speak with the NC DOT personnel at the Rodanthe Ferry dock regarding priority passage on the Ferries.
