Peanut Butter and Jellyfish Sandwiches? I Wish.
Studies show that Jellyfish blooms are becoming more and more frequent worldwide. East Asia has been particularly hard hit. Jellyfish already take a heavy toll on society with stings killing dozens of people each year—far more than shark attacks. Some scientist say they are the most dangerous marine creature in the world. FACT: The box jellyfish is especially lethal — A victim can die within 3 minutes of being stung. Everything from fouling fishing nets, killing farmed fish, closing down popular beaches, and clogging cooling intakes at coastal power plants has put Jellyfish up there with the worst of them. And now, global warming, overfishing for certain species and the ever increasing marine dead zones caused by toxic waste, etc… are “opening up more ecological space” for these slimy creatures.
Just asked anyone who visited the Outer Banks beaches last summer during what was considered one of the worst jellyfish invasions in our area and I’m sure they’ll agree that it was quite a problem. Now if we can just figure a way to incorporate jellyfish into our day-to-day diet, we would would be on our way to solving this crazy problem.
